Advent

Advent is derived from the Latin word meaning coming.  Therefore, Advent is the period of time we spend waiting prior to Christ's birth; Jesus is coming.  This is a beautiful time of year for the church and one of her many celebrations!  For many reasons, Advent has more meaning this year than any prior year.  As a result, I have spent the last several weeks planning and preparing how we were going to celebrate Advent.  Here are the things we will be doing:

1.  Advent Wreath
2.  Advent Calendar
3.  Jesse Tree
4.  Celebrate St. Andrew and St. Nicholas
5.  O Antiphons
6.  Blessing of the Christmas Tree & Nativity
7.  Prayer Corner for Scripture time
8.  Daily mass at least twice a week
9.  Confession
10.  Daily meditation and Scripture reading to prepare for the Lord's coming

As I enter this Advent season, I am reminded that while my spirit is willing, my flesh is weak.  Having three small children and a husband who works endlessly, it is easy to become discouraged and lazy.  However, I pray each day for the grace of the Holy Spirit to give me the strength and the energy to overcome my sin of sloth and open my heart and my mind to Jesus; putting Him always first.

We all have an appointment with Christ, sooner or later.  Will you be ready?  Are you living your life in a manner worthy of Him?  During this season of Advent, seek forgiveness of your sins and humbly approach the newborn King.  Only through God's graces can you overcome the sinful nature of your human flesh.  Jesus wants us to be in communion with Him.  Through the Sacrament of Reconciliation, you can be restored to a state of grace.  By receiving the Body and Blood of Christ on a regular basis, God will give you the grace needed to remain close to Jesus.  This is what God desires of us all.  May the Holy Spirit give you desire to seek Him!
